How We Grade Our Wood
The grading of stock blanks is extremely subjective but I’ve tried to keep our grading
system as simple as possible.
The criteria we use are as follows:
Wood Density: Dense enough to hold carving details well.
.Curl and Figure: The amount of stripe or quilted area.
Uniformity: This is how uniform the curl or figure is in the entire length of the stock.
Intensity: The amount of curl or figure in the blank.
Wood Grades and Pricing for Curly Maple
# 1 No curl or very little curl and blemishes. ( very limited supply) $ 50.00 to $ 60.00
#2 No Curl or very little curl .( limited supply) $ 60.00 to $ 75.00
#3 Curl over 60% of the length, sometimes irregular. $ 75.00 to 90.00
# 4 Curl full length,uneven in some area. $ 90.00 to $ 120.00
# 5 More even curl, some areas not as vivid. $ 120.00 to $160.00
#6 Even curl full length. $ 160.00 to $ 200.00
# 7 Nice even curl or exceptional figure, as good as it gets! $200.00 to $ 275.00 plus
# 4 and 5 grades are the most popular.
